This year’s How to Train your Dragon serves as definitive proof that live-action remakes can transcend the animated source material, revitalising the story world of the eponymous book series through its faithful adaptation of the iconic resident Vikings and Dragons of the Island of Berk.

The film’s breathtaking animation is a highlight, soaring to especially fantastical heights as our protagonist Hiccup takes flight on his newfound dragon friend, Toothless. The atmosphere and majesty of the wild Island of Berk and beyond are portrayed with the awe-inspiring majesty they deserve, leading to a truly authentic and jaw-dropping spectacle. The vibrant world-building and technical finesse of the film are complimented by its invigorating score by composer John Powell. As the score reaches its apex, the audience cannot help but be enthralled by the majestic world extending before them.

Gerard Butler reprises his role as Stoick the Vast, delivering the emotive depth and gravitas worthy of the chief of the Hairy Hooligan tribe. The casting beyond this is spot-on, with genuine and convincing performances throughout. The central relationship between Hiccup and Astrid is especially impactful, and will certainly warm the hearts of the most cultivated cinema goers. All of these directorial decisions lead to a tone familiar to the original, but somewhat more grounded and mature, as if it has grown up with fans of the franchise.

Themes of friendship and love eclipsing cultural barriers resonates with all audiences, and beyond the nostalgia for the original works, there lies a truly standalone action adventure film that viewers of all ages can enjoy.
